Calligraphy: the art of written forms   Jackie Hefty

An introduction to Calligraphy in a nut shell.  No experience necessary, those repeating will be challenged with additional material.  Learn the basics of several lettering styles and the importance of practice. Working with pen/brush, ink, and paper, express yourself in this age old format.  Hand-letter a favorite poem or quotation for gifts, create unique greeting cards, and more. Minimal supplies are needed and you can continue your learning at home.  Thurs  July 3, 10   1 - 4  $75/$5 materials

Looking to our gardens, we will use a variety of pressed flower petals to form beautiful papers.  A terrific way to preserve the beauty of those flower petals from your garden. Processes include; recycling papers, sheet formation, pulp painting and more. Students may continue papermaking adventures at home. *May be repeated and used as studio time.* Fri, Sat, and/or Sun  July 4, 5, and/or 6  1 - 4  $55/$15 materials (per day)

Explore the many facets of papermaking in this weekly open studio work atmosphere. After understanding the basic techniques, the beginner will be comfortable working alongside the more experienced. Sumi-e: Beginnings and Beyond  Sue Beavers  

Here's an opportunity to take your art, your painting to another level. But you won't have to try to learn it all in a day, by investing a few morning hours during this 3 week class, you will share in Sue's passion for the Japanese culture and learn the techniques of creating a sumi-e painting. Sumi-e means ink picture in Japanese and is composed of 4 basic strokes.  These strokes are said to represent all of the shapes and forms in the universe.  They are called the 4 gentlemen:  Bamboo, Wild Orchid, Chrysanthemum and Plum Blossom.  Sign up to learn more!   July 8, 15, 22, 29  9 - noon   All four sessions  $180/$20 materials fee, individual sessions @ $ 50/ $5 material fee

Explore choosing, folding, tearing, and cutting paper, besides learning basic sewing and gluing techniques to create a selection of unique books with minimal supplies.  Discover a plethora of ideas for how to utilize beautiful decorated papers. Also a good foundation for more advanced book structures. Continue making beautiful books at home with just a few basic tools. Shades of Gray: The Value of Value  Kay Brathol-Hostvet

Value, the relative lightness or darkness of a color or as a scale of varying shades of gray, is the most important element of design. Learn how to both create and discern values in this informative workshop. We'll create value charts (gray scales) in several mediums, convert color tones to white-gray-black values, and learn how to visually balance a work by value or tone. This valuable workshop is appropriate for all skill levels!  Many materials provided.

Susan uses music, art and writing to tap into emotions. Feelings are expressed within a safe and contained environment through listening to music and drawing. Using the non-dominant hand, the creative, spiritual, feeling part of the brain is accessed to help explore and better understand yourself and your emotions. Through creativity, the soul instinctively heals itself. No artistic talent is required.    The non-dominant hand exercises enable the intuitive, creative, spiritual problem solving side of the brain to be accessed.  Minimal supplies, 8x10 sketch book or journal with unlined paper and a set of 12 markers. Explore one-of-a-kind printmaking methods using gelatin. Employ both additive and subtractive methods of working, stencils and natural elements add extra dimension. Gelatin 'plates' will be prepared ahead for you. Enjoy an exciting, fun, and non-intimidating approach to painting in oils or acrylics. If you always wanted to paint in oils or acrylic, but didn’t know where to start, this workshop is for you. Learn the basics, such as laying out colors on your palette, brush techniques, canvas materials, color theory, contrast/values, and more. At this studio oil/acrylic workshop, where Karen demonstrates and reveals how the Impressionists used color, shapes, textures and personal style. Learn through Van Gogh and Monet’s styles, using techniques and textures to create an 'original' impressionist painting in your style. This workshop will heighten your understanding of drawing, value, color temperature, edge control. Book Structures: Basics & Beyond ( Sewn Accordion ) Jackie Hefty   Join us for the afternoon creating a variation on the hard bound codex structure. A playful approach using the accordion fold, sewing and binders board. Not to worry about pages aligning or papers being all the same. Great way to use up odd mix of papers. Design allows for window openings, folds on the fore-edge and personalized collage and journaling elements. We will utilize basic sewing and gluing techniques.
