Book Structures: Variations on the Accordion
Jackie Hefty
Versatile and adaptable, concertina or accordion style book structures lend
themselves to so much more. We will 'play' with and investigate variations on a theme using these structures.
A style or structure that can be woven together, layered as a tunnel book, bound with a coptic stitch or played out like the
instrument it is often called by. Linear progression of a story line or imagery is favored by adults and children alike, yet
it can be appreciated for the simple alluring structural design alone. Paper choices/options will be discussed. Participants
will need to purchase or use from your personal stash as appropriate. No book making experience needed, no specialized tools
required to continue your 'play' at home. If you already have any of the items in the Basic Tool Kit, please bring.

It just sounds difficult, not really so hard, but it gives you bragging rights! You will be sure to impress your
friends or family with your bookmaking skills when you show them this creation. An exposed stitching design on the spine of
the book resembles a herringbone pattern. This book is designed to lie flat when open which allows for ease in drawing
or writing. Makes a great gift! Previous book making is recommended, but not required. Minimal supplies are necessary to continue
making these beautiful books at home. Class sizes are limited. All materials needed are included but suggestions for
personal embellishments are provided in the supply list. Tues Sept 16

Introduction to Block
Printing (linoleum, etc.) S.V. Medaris
This is an introductory level printmaking class. Explore how to make block prints using linoleum. Plan, draw
and transfer your design, prep, cut and print a linoleum block without a press. Demonstrations will include: different
ways to add color to your print, printing on fabric and/or tees (with the press),or silk scarves printed by hand, and a 2-color
card/print with basic registration.
Focus on a design for holiday or greeting cards if you'd like, giving it your personal touch.
Or, consider printing on scarves or tees, with gift making
in mind. A smaller block can be carved reasonably fast, and used as a repetitive motif. Explore the power of the multiple
in printmaking... by printing patterned motifs or printing repetitions on fabric and cards. (additional cost for silk scarves,
or bring your own t-shirts, all are great affordable gifts)
Make your design as simple or as complex as you'd like, but keep details to a minimum and/or size of block small
so that you can finish cutting and printing before end of workshop. (5" x 7" - 4" x 6" ideal. No larger than 8" x 10")
Better understand the different substrates for cutting (different kinds of linoleum, rubber, wood, and synthetic materials),
different papers for printing on, and the different tools you'll need for different techniques/substrates. Note: More detailed information on supply list. Sat / Sun, Sept 27 and 28, Sat 9-4, Sun 10-4
