Plein Air in Soft Pastel

Plein Air Painting in Soft Pastel    Kay Brathol-Hostvet

Pastel is perfect for depicting the various textures and colors of the landscape and is a very portable medium so it is ideal for plein air painting-working directly from nature. You'll complete two or three small works on different papers, provided by the instructor. Previous experience in soft pastel is highly recommended, but beginners with good drawing skills are welcome.  Sat, June 18  9 - 4  $105/$5 materials

Plein Air in Oils, "Letting Go"   Jan Norsetter

For beginning and intermediate students

In this workshop I will show you a couple of methods of approaching plein air painting. For outdoor painting I usually mix colors using 7 tubes of paint (see supply list below). We'll talk about placement, shadows, lighting, and palette management. We'll also have some discussion and examples of what I refer to as "Letting Go".  At some point in the painting process I let go of what exactly is in the scene and concentrate on what the painting needs to give it some pizazz or oomph -- using artistic license or personal sensitivity to finish the painting. (Move a tree, add some more trees, get rid of trees, simplify the background, add color, add texture...) I don't use solvents most of the time (and never indoors) so I have developed strategies for handling paint using Gamblin Solvent free gel or M Graham alkyd walnut oil and for cleaning my brushes with soap and water.

Just a little note:

Many of the classes I personally offer are meant to provide a progression in the inter-related book arts opportunities. It is not necessary to take them in any specific order, but understand they are complimentary in nature. By taking a decorative paper workshop, you may utilize your work in a book structure as text pages, end sheets or as a cover. Likewise, by taking papermaking you may use the results in a book or as a substrate for a print, drawing, painting, or with letterpress.   Think of them as part of, or a means to an end, not the end in themselves. (not that many can not stand alone and be appreciated as completed work) It is also for this reason I repeat some foundational workshops more often. Understanding the method to my madness may be helpful when making workshop choices.
