Pastel Interpretations (Soft Pastel)

Kay Brathol-Hostvet

Soft pastel is a very adaptable medium and is perfect for learning different painting techniques.  In this studio workshop, you will do four different interpretations from the same photographic reference.  Each work in your series will be quite unlike the others; you won't believe you had it in you!  We will be using different papers and styles of application for each piece; consequently, you will learn which styles and techniques work best for you.  Previous experience with soft "chalk-like" pastel is recommended, but beginners are welcome.  All paper provided; a supply list will be sent to you. Tuition discount if also enrolled in Introduction to Painting with Soft Pastel.

Curious?  Frustrated?  Learn the basics of Color Theory:  Hues, Tints, Shades, Tones, Contrasts and Harmonies.  In this workshop we will do yarn windings and other exercises to decipher color.  As a group we will look at examples of your work that you think are successful and examples that do not work as well.... We'll figure out why.  Make your work come alive.

Plein Air Painting in Soft Pastel

Kay Brathol-Hostvet

Rejoice in spring and your creativity!  The natural beauty at Whispering Woodlands will be our muse.  Pastel is perfect for depicting the various textures and fresh colors of the spring landscape and is a very portable medium so it is ideal for plein air work.  We will use the studio as our home base, but head outside to work directly from nature.  Kay will demonstrate several techniques that are especially helpful for outdoor work.  You will complete two small paintings that can be used as studies for larger studio works or might stand alone as plein air masterpieces!  Previous pastel or other painting experience is recommended. If bad weather, we will work in the studio from photographs or a nature-inspired still life.  Paper will be provided; a supply list will be sent to you.

Painted Pages & Book Making

(AKA Painted Storybooks)

Jill K. Berry

Artists' books are a synthesis of every art form I have ever tried: drawing, painting, journaling, photography, poetry and storytelling. In this class we will begin by painting pages with all sorts of mediums, languages and hues. We will then transform our painted pages into books that will contain our words and pictures. Content, composition, palettes, craftsmanship, and creativity are all a part of this way of working, and we will discuss effective techniques in each area. Depending on the energy level of the crowd, we will make five artists' books, maybe more!  Material fee includes kits for books, paints, poems, and lots of other goodies.

There are plenty of inspirational settings to choose from as your writing spot at Whispering Woodlands.(rustic or manicured) As we gather back together, we then pare it down, dice it into pleasing lines, add a couple of metaphors and a dash of whimsy maybe, and serve up some metaphysics.  We will critique each other's work (kindly) as we eat and listen.
