Whispering Woodlands in Winter

Winter in Wisconsin - it doesn't take you long to realize the winter months are unpredictable here in Wisconsin. It is for this reason that the winter schedule does not include many any regional or national instructors. Only the hardy local yokels will be providing programs in January and Febrrrrruary!

Liberate your Printmaking (AKA Monoprinting)

Jackie Hefty facilitator

With or without the assistance of our Bunch Printing Press, you can explore the area of Monoprints. With layer upon layer of colorful paints or inks and collage items, you will create your individualized image. Open to interpretation, monoprints can be as liberating as childhood finger-painting or as disciplined as a formal portrait painting. Come explore your preferences. This workshop will be designed more as an open studio, limited enrollment will allow for plenty of work space and time. Various approaches and techniques will get you started, followed by learning opportunities and a community atmosphere of sharing.  One, two, three or four days, your choice.  Bring your lunch and take a break when you wish.  No experience necessary.

Artists often use photographs as references for their paintings and drawings. This workshop will show you various ways to work from photos creatively, rather than simply copying the image before you. Explore modifying elements, changing colors, and other experimental applications in a variety of media. Bring your own photographic references or use photos from the instructor's collection. You will work in your favorite painting or drawing medium for the final project. Other project materials will be provided by the instructor.  See supply list. Class size limit: 8

Introduction to Color Strategies

Kay Brathol-Hostvet

Color is the most familiar element of design-and the most complex. Understanding basic color theory goes a long way in making you a better designer and artist, whether you want to paint a canvas or decorate a room, design your own quilts or plan your garden for the most visual impact. Lecture, numerous handouts, and several hands-on projects will help you become more fluent in the language of color and more confident in the application of color theory to your designs.  Many materials provided; see supply list for required materials.

Introduction to Letterpress

Jackie Hefty

Using cast metal letterforms (type), you will handset a short quote, poem or personal greeting from the assortment of Whispering Woodlands fonts or typestyles. Type is set or placed in order, upside down and backwards. Challenging at first to say the least.  Print multiple copies to send to family and friends. There are also stock images, wingdings, etc. that can be used to enhance your piece. Think of this as pre rubberstamping, used in production printing before the typewriter or computer.  Discover the history behind the printing press, used as both a workhorse and an art form.  Class size will remain small to accomodate individual needs.

Mon/Tues   Feb 22/23  10 - 4 $140/$10 materials

Due to recent requests, we are adding a one day only option  Mon Feb 22  10-4  $75

Retreat/Relax/Reconnect            Ann Marie Waterhouse & Jackie Hefty

While in the midst of another Wisconsin winter we often feel the need for warmth and sunshine. Short of traveling great distances to those warmer climates, consider a day for yourself to retreat from the everyday, relax with like minded individuals and reconnect to your inner soul.

Each of us possesses individual learning patterns. In the retreat we will explore how these patterns help us make choices. We will use art techniques to delve deeper into soul issues that live within us. Focusing on these soul issues may help us reach a greater level of acceptance of ourselves and who we are becoming. And, it's fun!

Whispering Woodlands will provide you with a warm and nurturing environment as you learn more about yourself and what feeds your soul, your spirit, your uniqueness. Opportunities to play, to explore, to express yourself through various artistic techniques will emphasize the process, allowing you to connect to your inner voice. Meditation and reflection will round out your experiences in this warm and personal small group environment.

Sat Feb 27   9:30 - 4   $75/byo lunch  or  $75/$5 vegetarian lunch
