Whispering Woodlands
Archives Wow,
to be 'old' enough to have archives! Primarily
this is to give people a sense of what we have been doing in our first year and a half. And yup, you guessed it, we haven't
been sitting still. . . So, check it out, let us know if you see something you'd be interested in knowing more about. We have
not exhausted the possibilities for programs or instructors by any means and yet we are happy to repeat previous workshops/instructors
as interest dictates. Change, diversity and repetition are all in our vocabulary. Looking forward to 2010!

Kim Rae Nugent's "Interactive Art Workshop" book |
|
Interactive Art Book |
Interactive Art Book (A*) Kim Rae Nugent
When we read a novel our senses are activated through our imagination. Through an artist's eyes
we are treated to visual imagery in a picture book. But an interactive book is "hands on" beckoning it's
viewer to participate in the story. As a child Kim was fascinated with how interactive books worked and she still is. Pulling
tabs, spinning circles, lifting flaps, touching textural images, how fun! However, it is always more enjoyable to try and
recreate the mechanism with your own art. Interactive techniques don't need to be limited to children's art. Some
of it can be quite sophisticated in style and message. The base upon which you create an art book will explore the following skills: color theory; working with a
limited palette; composition; and background techniques. To add movement to your art: a revolving wheel; maze puzzle; image
slide; and tabs will be among the interactive techniques incorporated. Quotes and embellishments can be added as time permits.
The nature of this type of interactive art lends itself well to themes of movement, change, and journeys. Artists of all skill
levels are welcome! (A* One of 4 book workshops Kim offers )

Nature
Poetry Workshop Lauren Shapiro Sat. Nov. 1 10-4 $75
In this one-day workshop, we'll focus on poetry that uses nature imagery to explore more complex
emotional terrain. We'll read some successful poems by published poets and discuss what makes them so; what it is it that
these poets have done to transform images of nature into something even more meaningful? We will also do some of our own writing
in response to our surroundings, and we'll spend part of the day critiquing previously written poems by workshop participants.
This is a great opportunity to get feedback on your work (whether or not it explores nature themes), to learn more about the
craft of poetry, and to spend some time writing in an idyllic natural environment.
James
Wright, American Poet Relieved, I let the book fall behind a stone. I climb a slight rise of grass. I do not want to disturb the ants Who are walking single file up the fence post, Carrying small white petals, Casting shadows so frail that I can see through them. I close my eyes for a moment and listen. The old grasshoppers Are tired, they leap heavily now, Their thighs are burdened. I want to hear them, they have clear sounds to
make. Then lovely, far off, a dark cricket begins In the maple trees.

Making a Scene
Kevin
Gonzalez Sat.
Nov. 1 10 - 4 $75 While
general discussions in fiction workshops tend to focus on certain elements of the craft - such as structure, characterization
and conflict - this course will also help you hone an essential skill that many writers find difficult to master: the art
of writing in scene. Essentially, scenes are the building blocks for stories. In a scene, you are provided with a fixed setting
and a continuous stream of time. In it, all of the necessary elements of a story begin to come together: the characters interact,
the conflict is carried out. Yet a great deal of contemporary fiction seems to rely heavily on summary, on unnecessary back
story and flashbacks that instead of strengthening the story end up cluttering the narrative. We;ll focus primarily on stories
you'll bring from home.

Darcy Lanz-Sage |
Darcy Lanz-Sage is currently
an art teacher for the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District. She has been teaching art to people of all ages
for over 25 years. Because she is an art educator, she is interested and involved with many different art media.
For several years she sold her own art work at small shops and at art fairs throughout Wisconsin; including works of pottery
in her early years; then watercolor paintings; and later, jewelry and small rughookings. She continues to take classes
taught by others because she loves learning and enjoys the camaraderie with like minded people. In a recent class she
took, she had to write a Mission Statement and it pretty much sums up what she is all about. This is what it said "
I teach to create in others a passion for learning. I teach art because: I have a passion
to create art and to continually learn about art and art processes; and a need to share, inspire, encourage, and challenge
others with that knowledge." Her latest explorations involve the surface decoration of fabric and paper.
She loves texture and layering and is having fun making her own decorated journals and fabrics. Mixed Media!
|
Kristi Peiss |
Kristi Peiss has
always had a hand in some form of textile art; sewing, quilting, knitting, crewel, cross stitch, fabric dyeing, but primitive
rughooking has taken over! She believes it is the most forgiving form there is. So, for her, it is the most relaxing and fun.
She began rug hooking ten years ago and belongs to the Heritage Primitive Ruggers of Wisconsin. Kristi uses 95% recycled
wool in her projects. She finds the search for unused items and designing her own patterns very gratifying and loves the results
from using different colors and textures. She has sold rugs in a store in northern Wisconsin and has hooked some commissioned
pieces. She finds that sharing the art of rughooking and inspiring beginners is truly rewarding.
