Just a little note:

Many of the classes I personally offer are meant to provide a progression in inter-related book arts opportunities. It is not necessary to take them in any specific order, but understand many are complimentary in nature. Likewise, a good foundational class in tools and working methods will be to your advantage for intermediate or advanced work. By taking a decorative paper workshop, you may utilize your work in a book structure as text pages, end sheets or as a cover. Similarily, by taking papermaking you may use the results in a book or as a substrate for a print, drawing, painting, or with letterpress.   Think of them as part of, or a means to an end, not the end in themselves. (not that many can not stand alone and be appreciated as completed work) It is also for this reason I repeat some foundational workshops more often. Understanding the method to my madness may be helpful when making workshop choices.

I'll have it set and ready to run on a press.  We'll spend some time discussing the basis of setting the type, inking the press and the rest of the time printing.  Perfect short introduction to learning how to create unique greeting cards or small broadsides.  Print multiple copies to give to family, and friends.    4 hours  $7 materials   Fun to do with a friend or two!

Personalize Your Greeting Cards 
Send unique letterpress printed greeting cards this year. Spend an afternoon creating beautiful letterpress cards. The presses will be ready to roll with generic greetings and old printers blocks (as shown in the photos) to produce an assortment of individualized letterpress printed cards. You will go home with several unique cards that you can proudly say you printed. Choose from several designs and papers.  A variety of unique or individualized paper choices will be available for purchase or bring your own. (Recommendations on supply list)  3 - 4 hours $7 materials

Linoleum Block prints paired with Letterpress Type - it's a natural combination. Print yours as a broadside or create a personal seasonal or holiday card. Incorporate a personal greeting, caption or poem with a unique linoleum block printed design or image you have carved.  May be printed as a postcard, folded greeting card or as a broadside (single sheet image & text, think Wanted Posters)   Two 4 hour sessions  $15 materials

Introduction to Letterpress Printing

Learning the full process . . .

Using cast metal letterforms or large carved wood letters (type), you will handset a short quote, poem or personal greeting from the assortment of Whispering Woodlands fonts or typestyles. Type is set or placed in order, upside down and backwards. Challenging at first to say the least.  Print multiple copies to share with family and friends. There are also stock images, wingdings, etc. that can be used to enhance your piece. Think of this as pre rubberstamping, used in production printing before the typewriter or computer.  Discover the history behind the printing press, used as both a workhorse and an art form.  Students will be responsible for purchasing papers for proofing and printing, based on individual preferences.   Four 3 hour sessions  $15 materials fee
