Exploring Abstraction with Soft Pastel    Debora L. Stewart PSA

Debora Stewart will teach workshop participants how to create abstractions in pastel.  Exercises are used to help students "loosen up" and become more expressive.  Students will learn how to create abstract compositions, small thumbnail "source drawings", color studies and color theory and creating larger works.  Bring structure, depth, movement and value  to your abstractions through the use of  underpainting.    You will learn a variety of ways to develop abstract compositions with pastel.  Loosen up and become more spontaneous in this workshop.  This is a workshop for those with a basic understanding of pastels.  Sun Aug 4  9 - 4  $125/$15 materials

Experimental Acrylic Weekend  Kay Brathol-Hostvet

This workshop is a shorter variation of the popular Experimental Acrylics. We will focus on the application of acrylic paint in creating expressive, non-representational works based on technical experimentation and design and color exercises. Acrylic is a wonderful painting medium for experimentation because it dries quickly allowing a buildup of multiple layers, or drastic changes. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels. Experimental Acrylic is a repeatable workshop, for those that have enjoyed taking it in the past and is suitable for all skill levels.    Sat/Sun, August 10-11, Sat-9-4, Sun-10-4    $195/$20 materials

Journaling Pages (text &/or image)   Sue Beavers

Susan uses music, art and writing to tap into emotions. Feelings are expressed within a safe and contained environment through listening to music and drawing. Using the non-dominant hand, the creative, spiritual, feeling part of the brain is accessed to help explore and better understand yourself and your emotions. Through creativity, the soul instinctively heals itself. No artistic talent is required.    The non-dominant hand exercises enable the intuitive, creative, spiritual problem solving side of the brain to be accessed.  Minimal supplies, 8x10 sketch book or journal with unlined paper and a set of 12 markers. Book Structures: Variations on the Accordion   Jackie Hefty

Versatile and adaptable, concertina or accordion style book structures lend themselves to so much more.  We will 'play' with and investigate variations on a theme using these structures.  A style or structure that can be woven together, layered as a tunnel book, bound with a coptic stitch or played out like the instrument it is often called by. Linear progression of a story line or imagery is favored by adults and children alike, yet it can be appreciated for the simple alluring structural design alone.  Paper choices/options will be discussed. Participants will need to purchase or use from your personal stash as appropriate. No book making experience needed, no specialized tools required to continue your 'play' at home. If you already have any of the items in the Basic Tool Kit, please bring.   Thurs, August 22, 29,   1-4  $95/$10 materials

Life Lines  Pamela Paulsrud

In this class we will investigate and incorporate the underpinnings of the hidden laws of nature-sacred geometry-exploring these forms and synthesizing the linear with the artistic aspect of pattern and beauty.

Step by step we'll design a template from which to springboard to create a portfolio of our own unique expression. A compass, straight edge and a variety of tools for writing and calculating forms will be paired with graphite, ink and watercolor.

Music, meditation, sound and silence will accompany us as we wind our way through a series of exercises exploring the tempo and voice of our unique line-story, script, gesture and mark-developing flow-letting go of the familiar long enough to greet the unexpected.

Paper Marbling

Jackie Hefty

Decorative paper techniques based on centuries old methods with modern adaptations. Floating colors and creating patterns with various tools, we will explore Western marbling.  Historically, marbled paper has been used to accent and embellish calligraphy, to flank royal or governmental documents, as book covers, end papers, or as a purely decorative art form in and of itself. Take delight in creating a stash of beautiful papers to use and admire. Paper recommendations provided on the supply list.   Appropriate for beginner or experienced, repeatable as studio work time. Tues Aug 27  1 - 4  $65/$15 materials
